Hi friends! This newsletter is (usually) a monthly-ish round-up of life things - what I'm enjoying, reading, learning, buying, doing, thinking about, and more. Sometimes, it’s a bit more vulnerable and personal, talking about things like whether or not to have a third kid, and how to handle rejection and feeling left out. Sometimes, it’s a deep dive into a specific topic, like travel, back to school, or today…dry skin!
Recently, Winnie has had super dry, red, chapped skin, mostly on her face around her cheeks, mouth, and nose. I know it’s uncomfortable for her and she just gets so mad that it hurts. But also…every time I tried to apply Aquaphor/Vaseline, she’d get more mad and wipe it off. I asked my trusted IG community for recommendations for dry, red, chapped skin - especially for littles. And y’all delivered! I received so many messages with great tips, tricks, and recommendations and many of you said you were struggling with the same thing. I wanted to compile the suggestions in one place to make it nice and easy for others!
I learned that 1) Aquaphor/Vaseline may be too strong for those with sensitive skin, and 2) to try putting a moisturizer on the skin FIRST with Aquaphor as a protectant layer on top of that (see: slugging).
The very top recommendation (Tubby Todd All Over Ointment ) was a product we already had in our home — but I hadn’t used it for some reason. We started applying it religiously several times a day and night. It didn’t irritate her skin like Aquaphor, she didn’t fight me when I applied it AND the chapped and dry skin REALLY improved within a few days. 🙌🏼
Note that I’m (obviously lol) not a doctor or dermatologist and wouldn’t call myself a skincare expert by any means. I’m just a normal mom who is trying to find something that works for my kid(s). But I’ve always been amazed at the wise, experienced parents and non-parents who follow me and appreciate their excellent recommendations - this list is no exception! 💛

Try oils topically, such as olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, and castor oil
Apply [whatever product] before bed and several times overnight (especially if you have littles that fight you on it!)
If going on for awhile with no changes, consider reaching out to your pediatrician or dermatologist about getting a prescription

This is a great list. It really depends so much on the specific skin and takes some trial and error. We're big fans of bag balm, Vanicream and CeraVe and it took some time to get there.
